Coaching Structure

Our Head Coach is Ian Barnes (Scotland) who has overall control of the rugby organisation for the club. Jim Renwick (Scotland and British Lions), Tom Philip (Scotland and Edinburgh Gunners) and Ken McCartney (ex international referee) make up the coaching team for the 1XV/2XV squad. Along with Finlay Calder (Scotland and British Lions captain) - who is overlooking the development of our young players - they provide a wealth of experience to develop players skills and standards.

Finlay Macpherson coordinates coaching for the 3rd XV and BATS 3XV squads - which along with the 4XV play in the two 3rd XV leagues. The BATS 3XV is a development side drawn from (A)ccies and our associated clubs - (B)roughton, and (T)rinity. This association ensures that the clubs are able to watch and develop young players - many who have come through the BATS youth structure - and provide a game for as many players as possible each weekend.

Off the pitch, Rugby Co-ordinator John Wright, and the Team Managers; Alistair Fenton (1st XV), Frank Spratt (2nd XV), George Menzies (3rd XV) and Gerry Love (BATS 3XV) and Ron McNab (4th XV), work tirelessly to ensure we regularly put out 5 senior teams on a Saturday.

Our fitness coach is Neil Mackenzie who will take warm up sessions and organise special training schedules for players where needed and oversee gym sessions on Monday evenings.

Laura Calder is the Club head physio, who organises a team of physios to support each playing team - backed up by FASIC who are based in the Edinburgh University complex at The Pleasance in Edinburgh. Laura - or one of her team - will be available at the Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Training during the season is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, STARTING - that is changed and ready - at 7pm. There are weight facilities in the squash court area of the clubhouse, which can be used both on Monday evenings and at times to suit players.

Teams will be selected on Mondays, announced on Tuesdays and finalised at Thursday's training session. It is player's responsibility to confirm their unavailability to the team coaches or manager and to check which team you are in for next weekend. We hope to put the team selections on the Club web site by each Tuesday evening. Finlay Calder (Scotland and British Lions captain) will be watching games all the way down the club and is the Selection Convener.

A few words from fitness coach Neil MacKenzie:

“Rugby training sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday with a weights session on Monday. If enough of you are serious about it we’ll add in a Wednesday weights session.

If you can’t make it down to rugby sessions or are going to turn up late because of work commitments, you need to be doing some ‘Fartlek’ training. This will help get those lungs working again and you can get these sessions and any other training sessions from me.

You also need to give me some idea of what you have access to in terms of fitness facilities, the programmes you have been following and realistically how much time you can give to your fitness. Looking forward to seeing you all at training !”
