BATs’ Review 27 January 2016

The struggle with the weather continues this week, as the home of BATs rugby continues to be pounded by rain.

ACE: This week we held an extra club session through our ACE program, which runs on the last Monday of every month. ACE provides players from S1-U18 with specialised coaching, combining position-specific work with general rugby development. Players also benefit from a strength and conditioning coach who runs a speed session for the first 20-25 minutes.

U18s: Saturday saw the start of the BATs U18 season, with a game against a strong Portobello side. Unfortunately for us, we struggled to get a full 15 out. However the boys who turned up made a valiant effort and the final score line of 7-57 did not reflect the effort and determination put in. Although credit where credit is due - Portobello played very well. Saturday’s game gives us a good starting point for us to work from as our season develops.

We are hoping to organise a fixture for the U18s for this Saturday but they do not current have one in place.

U16s: Sunday saw a good turnout from the U16s at Raeburn Place for a session run by Mark, James and Callum. The boys were put through their paces looking at moving the ball into the wide channels and the low leg tackle in a 2v1 situation. The boys involved trained well and significant improvement had been made by the end of the session.

This Sunday sees the first of the U16s’ league games when they host Biggar at Broughton High School. Kick-off to be confirmed.

Trinity Academy School of Rugby: Training was back to normal for those not doing exams. The boys have started the term well and seem keen to carry on with the progress made before Christmas. This week we have been working on looking to use the wide areas, being able to dictate a defence, and being able to attack how and where we want at our own pace.

There are fixtures this Saturday for S1 to S4 against Lasswade High School.

After School Clubs: The after school clubs are back in full swing this week with Broughton High School cluster at 15:15-16:30 on Mondays, Broughton Primary after school club on Tuesdays from 15:15-16:00, Wardie Primary after school club 15:30- 16:30 on Wednesdays and a Drummond Cluster after school club on Fridays at 13:00. We have been getting good numbers to the after school clubs and hope to continue growing local interest in rugby.
