The Edinburgh Academical Football Club, the oldest rugby club in Scotland, welcomes new players of all levels into the Club.
Last season our 1st XV were Premier 2 League Champions, second in the following play-off league and promoted to the RBS Premier 1 – the top level of club rugby in Scotland. Our 1st VII had a good a run in the Border series, making the final at Peebles, semi-final at Kelso and quarter-finals at Berwick, Earlston and Selkirk, The Club finished 6th in the King of the Sevens - the top non-Border club.
Our other teams performed well, with the 2nd XV finishing 6th in the National Reserve League 1 – a great effort considering a tough start to the season and having to rebuild the team due to player promotion to the 1st XV. The U20s were unbeaten for the second season running in the Student U20 Development League and also in the Scottish Rugby U20 Cup. The 3rd XV (aka ‘Blues’) finished 7th in the Reserve League East 1 - not bad considering six Border Clubs' 2nd XVs came into this league. The 4th XV (aka ‘Whites’) suffered most through losing so many players to sides up the Club, eventually finishing second bottom of their Reserve League East 2.
With structural and regional changes afoot within Scottish Rugby, and the competition so unreliable in the U20s League, it is important that we as a Club don't get left behind. Consequently, we have decided that we will be ‘resting’ the 4th XV (‘Whites’) and putting our excellent U20s Squad into the leagues. This will raise the standard of our U20s, giving them more regular and more competitive fixtures.
So, this season we will have four teams playing in the Scottish Rugby RBS Leagues – the 1st XV in the RBS Premier 1, the 2nd XV in the RBS Reserve League National 1, the U20s in the RBS Reserve League East 1 and the 3rd XV in the RBS Reserve League East Pod A.
We have strengthened last season’s coaching team of Head Coach, Simon Cross (more info click here), Jonny Else (1st XV), Malcolm McVie and Andrew Easson (2nd XV), Graham Bonner (U20s) and Troy Maclachlan (3rd XV) with the addition of Chris Flockhart as Strength and Conditioning Coach and Douglas McClure as U20s and 3rd XV Forwards Coach.
Training takes place at Raeburn Place every Tuesday and Thursday – ready to go at 7pm.
The social scene at Raeburn Place has one of the best reputations in town, with regular events being held in the clubhouse throughout the season.
