Match Preview NL1 12: Accies v Stewart's Melville (rescheduled)

Saturday 3 February
1st XV v Stew Mel, Gavin Calder Memorial Cup, RP, 12:00

This week we see our closest of neighbours, Stewart's Melville, at Raeburn Place, in our rescheduled National 1 league game, where for the second time we will play for the Gavin Calder Memorial Cup, a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to rugby, especially for Stew Mel.

We made hard work of our previous game in the first week of September, when we were leading 0-24 at half time and eventually won 26-38. We conceded more points in that second half than we have in any other full game this season.

Without doubt we have improved as a squad of players since that fright, coming through some tough games to stand 15 out of 15 at the top of National 1.

Stew Mel have struggled all season, although they have beaten Gala at Netherdale, given the other Border sides some close run games and won at Aberdeen last week, which is never an easy thing to do.

Those records mean nothing as the players take the field on Saturday. It is what happens in the 80 minutes of the game that matters. Stew Mel will be all out to knock us off our perch and take our unbeaten run away, plus gain some valuable points to try and stave off relegation and carry the Cup back to Inverleith.

Our squad has trained well this week and is prepared and we look forward to a good game of rugby.

Coach's Comments

"We have the opportunity to celebrate and honour Gavin Calder by contesting the Calder Cup against Stewart’s Melville this weekend. I am hoping we put on a display on the day that would have inspired Gavin to pen one of his indulgent post-match reports for the Stewart’s Melville website.

"Rotations week this week provides starts for Weetman, Ramm and McGinley. Wood earns a second start after his Man of the Match display last week and Chalmers moves to fullback to make room for Ramm on the wing. The bench will pique some interest, with probably the best group of ‘finishers’ afforded to us this year, stacked as it is with Black, Lecour, Johnson and Luther Hirini. it is also great to see Robert Lovett return, having pulled his hamstring in a dubious display of dancing in November."

Our senior squad for this week:

Other Games This Week

The 2nd XV play their rescheduled away fixture against Watsonians 2nd XV this week. Please note the game will be played on the all-weather pitch at Murrayfield, not at Myreside, and will kick off at 12:00. Following a strong win against Boroughmuir last week, we hope the 2s will retain their momentum on Saturday.

The 3rd XV have a week off due to the 6 Nations.
