President's Blog - 04 December 2014

After a couple of weeks ‘off’ for the Autumn Internationals, a BT Cup game against Jed and away at Boroughmuir last week, Saturday sees the first Premiership game at Raeburn Place for five weeks. And there is no mistaking the importance of the game to the Club after another close loss last week. With only seven Premiership games left, we need a win.

Last week’s game at Boroughmuir was another one that got away. We did lots of good things in the game but let ourselves down by not taking full advantage when we did have the ball, not putting ourselves in the right areas of the pitch and not retaining the ball at crucial times. The six point loss gained us a bonus point but leaves us five points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership.

This week we welcome Currie to Raeburn Place. Who will forget last season’s game? Four Campbells in our squad, two yellow cards, five penalties, a charged-down conversion, 11 tries and a winning drop-goal with the last kick of the match – unfortunately it was Currie’s drop kick.

In our game at Malleny Park in September we took our biggest loss of the season against a Currie side loaded with three Glasgow pros, all of whom I think were internationals. As things turn out it looks as if we will have two pros apiece this time: Alex Toolis and Chris Dean for us and prop Mike Cussak and centre James Downey for Currie.

The squad has trained hard and we have come up with some very close results since that last meeting with Currie. The spirit is there and I’m sure we’ll give it our all on Saturday.

Before we play Currie we have a pre-match lunch at Raeburn Place and look forward to welcoming 30-odd Accies’ ‘Has-beens’. As usual it is good to see them all back in the fold – they can be a bit of a hand-full at times but are always good company. I hope they enjoy the day.

We are pleased that Nyle Godsmark has been selected for the Scotland 7s squad that will be playing in the IRB 7s in Dubai this weekend and before moving on to South Africa for the following weekend’s tournament. Sam Pecqueur has been included in the initial Scotland Club XV squad in preparation for their games against the Irish Clubs and English Counties. Congratulations to both.

Saturday is our last home Premiership game of 2014. We are at Nailacre next week then on Monday 29 December an Accies XV will play our annual game against the Co-optimists. Our first game of 2015 will be the third round of the BT Cup against Hawick on Saturday 3 January, kick off 1.30pm. Please put the dates in your diary.

I have said this many times before but your support really does help the team and this week we need as many there as possible to offer encouragement. So, if at all possible, please make your way to Raeburn Place on Saturday, kick off 2pm – your Christmas shopping can wait a day or two.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Regards
John
