President's Blog - 13 February 2015

Last weekend did in the end deliver some rugby - other than the internationals - when the Whites (and friends!) played a combined Edinburgh Northern and Inverleith 2nd XV on Northern's pitch.

Our team included a few who were badly in need of some game time, including Tom Drennan and Callum Reid, both making their first appearances for a year or more after recovering from serious knee and wrist injuries respectively.

The game was a bit of 'one way traffic', but it was played in a good spirit and provided a good run out. We thank Northern and Inverleith for the opportunity to get these guys some game time.

This weekend the 1st XV have a friendly at Currie, the Development XV a league game away to Lasswade 2nd XV and the Whites play Inverleith 2nd XV at Inverleith.

The 1st XV will take a 25-man squad to Currie, including two current Edinburgh Academy schoolboys: Saul Melvin-Farr at fullback and Blair Kinghorn at 10. We wish them well in their first appearance for the Club.

Last week Scotland 7s finished fourth in the New Zealand round of the World Rugby 7s. Two Accies regulars, Nyle Godsmark and Chris Dean, were part of the squad that beat Samoa and only lost to England (eventual runners-up) in the last minute. Congratulations lads.

We are pleased to see Alex Glashan on the bench for Edinburgh who play Ospreys on Friday at Myreside. It is Alex's first time with Edinburgh - let’s hope he gets some game time. If he plays for more than 20 minutes he will stand down from our game on Saturday. This is your chance, Alex, get out there and show them!

Finally, a couple of reminders for you: on 27 March we are celebrating the first international football match, played at Raeburn Place on that date in 1871, and also the 25th anniversary of David Sole's side's Grand Slam win - Scotland's third Grand Slam. Further details, including how to book your place or table, can be found here. It's bound to be a great occasion – don’t miss out.

And this Sunday (15 February) we will see another first at our historic ground when The Edinburgh Clan will play Swansea Gladiators in a game of Unified Rugby at midday. You are all invited to see this game and support The Edinburgh Clan, who are based and train at Raeburn Place. After the game please join us in the bar for a few drinks and to watch the Scotland v Wales international on TV at 3pm. Further details available here.

I do hope you can make the game at RP on Sunday. It would be good to see this worthwhile event receiving support from our members.
