Stephen Cully, 1970 - 2011

We were very sad today to hear of the sudden death of former Accies player Stephen Cully, last Friday, at Tulliallan Police College in Fife.

Steve, who was only 41, was educated in Belfast and after leaving school attended university in Edinburgh. Following university, he joined the police where he had been for over 17 years.

He was a talented rugby player and he represented Ulster and Ireland Under 21s, Irish Exiles and the British Police as well as playing for Edinburgh Accies. After retiring from rugby, Steve took up running and had posted impressive times in a number of marathons and half-marathons.

Perhaps his biggest feat was the Marathon des Sables, a gruelling six-day run across the Sahara desert in 2009. At the time he said: "I am always looking for something more challenging to do."

Steve lived in the Borders, with his wife Rosi, daughter Hannah and son Josh.

All at Edinburgh Academicals Football Club send their sympathies to his family and friends - our thoughts are especially with his wife and children.
