Passing B

TIP: We recommend reading Minis Curriculum, Session Planning & Design and Coaching Skills & STEP prior to this sample session. Pitch sizes and teams sizes below adjustable to group sizes/training space.

SESSION FOCUS POINTS:

  • Concentrate on good passing technique - two hands on ball and pointing to target, receiver always has two hands up ready

  • Highlight use of the pass to find space (and for players without the ball to a good space to receive the pass)

  • STEP: Defenders drop-off to create more space/easier decisions, use different balls in game, consider ‘9-10-RUN’ to help alignment

  • One coach play in attack only to help younger ages ‘see’ in practice

0-15 mins - Coaches choice of Activation games

15-45 mins - Zone Circuit, Groups of 8-10 with 10 mins per zone (Add additional games and session time if larger groups)

ZONE 1 - HAWICK BALL

ZONE 2 - WALLACE BALL

Possible Condition - Enforce 9-10-RUN in attack

ZONE 3 - Skills & Technique

Skill Activity (7 mins): Waikato 2v1s

As per the below video - Setup a grid for 2v1s. Players line up in a 3 at side of grid with 1 ball at the end (defender) and 2 without the ball in line (attackers). Ball is passed along the line and the defender enter one side of the grid to defend (after passing the ball), then the attackers enter the other side (having received the ball( to execute a 2v1. Return to side and repeat, rotating roles and including other players as needed.

PROGRESSIONS: Make the grid smaller, add extra players (3v2s etc) and use different balls.

Technique Activity (3 mins): Waikato Tech

Same starter setup as Waikato 2v1s but do some reps of passing in 3s across and back on the same grid.

45-60 mins - Rugby Games, Stay in Groups and use Zones as pitches (Round Robin if time allows)
